In a world saturated with overly aggressive and masculine sports iconography, why not be a Booby?
Boobies are friendly, proud, brave, together and unflappable.
Boobies Are Friendly
The Blue-footed Booby has captivated human imagination for centuries.
All of the half-dozen Booby species are thought to take their name from the Spanish word “bobo” – meaning “stupid”. This is perhaps the impression that they gave early European settlers, who were intrigued by their clumsy, awkward waddle on land.
Any fear of humans they may have had has long since gone, displayed by their tame and unassuming wandering in and around tourists and locals.
Their reputation for openness and accessibility around people has become an endearing feature of the Blue-footed Booby.
Boobies Are Proud
Blue-footed Boobies may not be the most beautiful or gracious of creatures, however
they are proud of their most distinguishing feature.
Boobies are certainly hard to confuse with anything else. Their bright webbed pedes are instantly recognisable, whether they are covering their young to keep them warm, engaging in an elaborate courtship dance or awkwardly waddling on land.
Despite appearing comical to observers, these large and distinctive birds take enormous pride in their fabulous feet.
Boobies Are Brave
For all their clumsiness on land – their least gracious environment – Boobies are extremely agile in the air. The Blue-footed Booby prefers to fly!
Their physical adaptations make them exceptional divers. From soaring high above islands and islets looking for food and good nesting sites, they fold their long wings back around their streamlined bodies and plunge into the water from as high as 80 feet, dropping headfirst onto their targets like missiles.
A Booby can fly for hours at a time without getting tired.
Boobies Are Together
Blue-footed Boobies are social birds that live and hunt in groups.
The birds nest together in densely-packed colonies. When day breaks, they take to the air in search of seafood, often diving in large and harmonious co-operative groups. As a family unit both parents feed and care for their brood, sharing nesting duties year after year to ensure co-operation and compatibility.
Boobies stay close to home, and if given the chance, most will live and breed within a few dozen feet of where they were born.
Boobies Are Unflappable
Life as a young Booby can sometimes be tough, however the rigours of this rugged upbringing result in few consequences as adults.
No matter how relentlessly the birds had been pecked at and bitten by older siblings, no matter how often food had been snatched from their beaks or how slowly they had grown, on reaching maturity the birds prove to be surprisingly confident, capable and resilient. They are still able to attract partners and raise families as successfully as their domineering peers.
Boobies are unflappable.

We are a “parkrunning” club. Founded for parkrun, inspired by parkrun, moulded around parkrun. parkrun’s values are our values. We endeavour to uphold and represent these philosophies as best and as passionately we can, as if they were our own.
parkrun believes Mission Statements are important, and that if you live by them every single day they are an extremely powerful tool for supporting your dreams.
We support parkrun in working towards creating a healthier and happier planet, uniting our community under the shared banner of free community-led, socially-focused, physical activity.
